Antique Indian Home Décor to Add to Your Home

Create a vintage Indian aesthetic through these must-have vintage pieces

If you're looking to add a vintage Indian aesthetic to your home, the ideal starting point would be at a vintage store. I was surprised by the vast array of Indian home decor that I came across at the antique shops in Bowral - a small town near Sydney, Australia. Here are a few interesting pieces that caught my eye. Add these to your home for a vintage desi touch.

1. Indian Wrought Iron Door

Adding an antique Indian iron wrought door to your home offers a breathtaking juxtaposition of ancient artistry against modern aesthetics. Try find one with candle holders, to create a peaceful ambience at home.

2. Large Antique Wooden Mortar

At first, I thought this wooden object was a quirky side table. I was amazed to discover this was actually an old wooden mortar used to grind spices back in the day. Although you may not have the need to grind spices in a mortar (with electronic grinders now available) - adding an ancient wooden mortar to your home adds a lovely Indian aesthetic (and yes it does serve as a functional side table).

3. Antique Indian Damchiya

An antique Indian sideboard is definitely a must-have to add to your home. Add this piece to a hallway or near your front door to leave a great first impression for any guests. The delicate woodwork seamlessly blends with the elegant mirrorwork, creating a mesmerising display.

4. Antique Indian Mirrors

If you're seeking to capture the essence of heritage and add a touch of Bollywood magic to your life, look no further than an antique Indian mirror. These mirrors, crafted with impeccable artistry, hold the power to transport you to the palaces of Jaipur and the grandeur of royal India.

5. Kashmir Silk Rugs

Adding a handmade rug crafted in Kashmir, not only will add a vintage Indian aesthetic to your home but also is a great way to add some colour to your home. By purchasing a Kashmir silk rug, you will also support skilled Kashmiri weavers who spend months crafting each rug.

6. Antique Chapati Boards

I was definitely surprised to find antique chapati boards at The Bronte Tram, a vintage store in Sydney’s south. They had many available in different colours, which will be a great way to add texture to your kitchen bench - who knows maybe your chapatis will also taste better.

7. Vintage Cast Iron Table & Chairs

Ancient Indian cast iron tables and chairs are the perfect touch to add to your garden. Every time you look at them you’ll be transported to the romantic and peaceful city of India, Udaipur.

8. Old Paper Mache Bowls

Finally, ancient paper mache bowls are perfect for home decor. They complement modern furniture while adding a vintage touch.

If you want to add a vintage desi touch to your home, keep an eye out for these items at your local vintage shop. If you don’t have a vintage shop nearby, I managed to find similar items on Etsy - from Wrought Iron Doors to Ancient Chapati Boards.
